Have your ombré powder brows or microshading faded into a cold, ashy blue-gray tone?
Discolored permanent makeup is one of the most frustrating things to see in the mirror every morning. Many clients try to cover up dark gray or blue brows with heavy concealer—or worse, layer more makeup over top—only to make them look thicker and heavier.
Recently, a client came to Munique Brows Studio after struggling with ashy blue microshading. Here is how seeing her friend’s stunning 2-year-old brows finally convinced her to start her correction journey with Pico laser lightening.
The Turning Point: A Friend’s Natural 2-Year Fading
Our client had received ombré powder brows elsewhere that over time faded into an unflattering, cold ashy blue shadow. Discouraged by the color change, she hesitated to touch them for months.
Her turning point came when she noticed her close friend’s brows. Her friend had received Ombré Powder Brows at Munique Brows Studio, and after nearly two years, her brows had faded softly, subtly, and naturally—with zero blue or gray undertones.
Realizing that quality permanent makeup should age gracefully, she took the plunge to fix her own.
Why Do Powder Brows Turn Ashy Blue?
Microshading and ombré powder brows turn blue or gray primarily due to two factors:
Ink Selection & Carbon Content: Inks with high carbon or cool black loads can shift to a cool slate-blue hue as yellow and red undertones break down.
Implantation Depth: Pigment implanted too deeply into the dermis undergoes the Tyndall effect, where light refracts through the skin, making brown ink appear blue or gray.
The Fix: Why Pico Laser Lightening Came First
When old powder brows are heavily saturated with dark ashy pigment, you cannot immediately tattoo over them. Adding new pigment to an already dark, cool base will only result in a muddy, dull look.
To give her the clean, flattering results her friend received, her correction required a two-step process:
Pico Laser Lightening: Using picosecond laser pulses, we shattered the stubborn blue pigment particles beneath her skin without harming her natural eyebrow hair. Lightening the old work created the neutral canvas necessary for a fresh set.
The Redo: Once the heavy blue tone was lifted to a faint, workable shadow, her brows were ready to be redesigned with a fresh, flattering ombré powder brow technique.
