Following the proper pre-care and post-care instructions is essential for the Pico laser removal process, as it directly affects the healing process and the final results.
Pre-Care Instructions for Laser Removal
To ensure the best results and a smooth procedure, please follow these instructions prior to your laser removal appointment:
Avoid Sun Exposure: Do not expose the treatment area to direct sunlight or tanning beds for at least 2 weeks before your appointment. Sunburned skin can increase the risk of complications.
No Waxing or Plucking: Avoid waxing, plucking, or threading the area for at least 2 weeks before your treatment to allow the laser to effectively target the pigment in the skin.
Avoid Certain Skincare Products: Do not use strong exfoliating products (such as retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid) for 1 week before your procedure.
Avoid Blood Thinners: Refrain from taking blood-thinning medications or supplements (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Vitamin E, or fish oil) for at least 7 days before your treatment.
Shave the Area (if necessary): If receiving laser removal on body tattoos or large areas, shave the treatment area the night before or morning of the procedure for a clean surface.
No Makeup on Treatment Area: Please arrive with a clean face and no makeup, especially on the treatment area.
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: Do not consume alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours before your session to prevent increased sensitivity.
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, as this will improve the procedure's effectiveness.
Post-Care Instructions for Laser Removal
After your laser removal procedure, following proper aftercare is crucial for optimal results and to promote healing. Please follow these guidelines carefully:
Keep the Area Clean and Dry: Gently cleanse the treated area with mild soap and water 2-3 times a day for the first 7 days. Pat the area dry with a clean towel.
Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep the treated area out of direct sunlight for 4 weeks post-procedure. Apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily to protect the skin.
No Swimming or Hot Saunas: Avoid exposing the treated area to hot water, steam, or saunas for at least 48 hours to prevent irritation.
Gently pat the healing area dry if it becomes wet: Prolonged water exposure within the first 5–7 days is not recommended, as it may increase the risk of infection and delay the healing process.
Avoid Sweating: Refrain from intense exercise or sweating for 48 to 72 hours after your treatment, as this can irritate the area and delay healing.
Do Not Pick or Scratch the Area: It’s normal for scabs or crusts to form as the skin heals. Avoid picking or scratching, as this can lead to scarring or loss of pigment.
Moisturize the Area: Apply a gentle moisturizer or healing ointment (such as Polysporin Complete, Aquaphor or CeraVe) to keep the treated area hydrated.
Avoid Makeup: Do not apply makeup on the treated area until it has fully healed (usually around 7-10 days).
Avoid Swimming: Stay out of pools, oceans, or any bodies of water for at least 7 days to reduce the risk of infection.
Be Patient: Redness, swelling, or slight scabbing is normal and will subside in a few days. The treated area may appear lighter or faded initially, but the pigment will resurface and darken over time.
Avoid Blood Thinners: Do not take any blood-thinning medications or supplements post-treatment, as they can cause increased bruising or bleeding.
Follow-Up Sessions: Your practitioner will recommend the number of sessions needed based on your skin type and the pigment being removed. Sessions are usually spaced 6 to 12 weeks apart.
Important: If you experience excessive redness, swelling, blistering, or any signs of infection, please contact your practitioner immediately for advice.
